Overview

The purpose of this qualification is to provide learners with the knowledge and skills to pursue a career in fitness coaching. Learners are provided with an understanding of anatomy, physiology and nutrition and how they relate to exercise and fitness. Learners are also provided with the knowledge and skills to be able to plan, deliver and supervise safe and effective exercise programmes within a gym or health club environment.

This qualification has been designed in partnership with employers and covers the knowledge and skills identified in the industry as essential for the fitness coach role, covering the planning and instructing of safe and effective exercise sessions as well conducting small group sessions and supporting clients’ exercise adherence and a healthy lifestyle. The qualification also provides the learner with an understanding of professionalism, personal development and how to deliver exceptional customer service.

This qualification includes the essential knowledge and skills that are needed to meet the requirements of the physical activity sector’s minimum standards for deployment.

What topics will I study?

Modules:

The learner must complete the five mandatory units:

  • Unit 1: Principles of anatomy, physiology and fitness (A/616/7499).
  • Unit 2: Professionalism and customer care for fitness instructors (K/616/7501).
  • Unit 3: Health and safety in the fitness environment (M/616/7502).
  • Unit 4: Conducting client consultations to support positive behaviour change (A/616/7504).
  • Unit 5: Planning and instructing gym-based exercise (F/616/7505).

Assessment:

This qualification is assessed by:

  • Coursework.
  • Portfolio of evidence.
  • Practical demonstration/assignment.
  • Multiple-choice exam.

Teaching and learning methods

Blended learning course where some units are completed from home, workshop activity will cover examined units and practically assessed units

Next steps: 

The course will open many doors to employment and offer progression onto roles such as personal trainer and exercise specialist. Fitness instructors are the foundation of the fitness industry and as such they will always be required and subsequently represent a great career opportunity.

Entry Requirements

This is a beginner’s course, but having some experience of gym-based exercises, including free weights, is highly recommended. The course requires physical exertion and individual participation is essential, therefore a degree of physical fitness is necessary. There is an element of communication (discussing, presenting, reading and writing) involved and learners should have basic skills in communication pitched at level 2.

Funding Availability 

Self-Financing: No funding available for this course. For fee’s over £150, you can set up an instalment plan to pay over 3 months (50% on the first month, and 25% for the following 2 months)
