GCSE English Language courses for adults take place throughout the week in the morning, afternoon and evening, so you should be able to choose one at a time that suits you. They are the perfect stepping stone to further study or the ideal way to open doors to more job opportunities.

This course is demanding and fast paced. You need to be willing to work independently for three or four hours a week in addition to attending your class regularly. Your teachers will be supportive and will guide you but If you do not already read frequently, you need to start doing so in order to pass the two challenging exams at the end of the year.

*Please note, a fee of £811 applies to ineligible adults from outside the EU or to those who already who have a grade C (or 4) or above in GCSE English.

What topics will I study?

The course prepares you for two final exams. Paper 1 requires you to demonstrate understanding of a short 19th century fictional text (e.g. from Charles Dickens) and to produce creative writing at a good standard in terms of vocabulary, spelling, grammar and punctuation. Paper 2 requires skills such as letter writing, speech writing, report writing and also asks you to study two short non-fiction texts (perhaps a newspaper article with a diary extract on a similar topic) and to compare them.

Next steps: Access to Higher Education or a range of Level 3 qualifications.
