Overview
GCSE English Language courses for adults take place throughout the week in the morning, afternoon and evening, so you should be able to choose one at a time that suits you. They are the perfect stepping stone to further study or the ideal way to open doors to more job opportunities.
This course is demanding and fast paced. You need to be willing to work independently for three or four hours a week in addition to attending your class regularly. Your teachers will be supportive and will guide you but If you do not already read frequently, you need to start doing so in order to pass the two challenging exams at the end of the year.
- What topics will I study?

The course prepares you for two final exams.
Paper 1: requires you to demonstrate understanding of two short 19th century non-fiction texts (letters and articles) and to produce a piece of transactional writing such as letter writing, speech writing, email at a good standard in terms of vocabulary, spelling, grammar and punctuation.
Paper 2: requires you to write an imaginative story and also asks you to study two short texts – fiction and non-fiction and to analyse the language and to compare them.

No formal qualifications are needed to complete GCSE English, the course is for adults who have not achieved a grade 4 (grade C).
GCSE English is a key qualification and is suitable for native British learners or bilingual learners who have achieved ESOL Level 2 in reading, writing and speaking and listening.

Funding Availability
As part of the Adult Skills Fund this course is free to anyone who has not yet achieved a grade 4 (Grade C) in English.
Additional Costs
Please note, a fee of £864 applies to learners who are not eligible to access public funds.
Progression and careers
Once completed you will be able to choose any Access to Higher Education or a range of Level 3 qualifications.
