Centre for Law and Social Sciences

The Centre for Law and Social Sciences is a £12 million development at Exeter College’s Hele Road campus, providing a modern, purpose-built environment for the study of subjects including Geography, History, Law, Politics, Sociology and Psychology.

Spanning four floors, the building has transformed this part of the campus, replacing the former Baker Building with a contemporary learning space designed to enhance the student experience and support the College’s future growth.

The centre features 25 dedicated classrooms alongside a range of breakout and independent study areas, creating flexible spaces for both teaching and collaboration.

A standout feature is the purpose-built moot room, designed to replicate a real courtroom. This specialist facility allows learners to take part in mock trials and debates, supporting the development of practical skills and enriching the curriculum.

Designed with learners at its heart, the Centre for Law and Social Sciences provides an inspiring environment for study, discussion and debate. It also offers flexible spaces that support wider engagement with the community, including partnerships with organisations such as the Tedd Wragg Trust and the University of Exeter.

Sustainability has been a key focus of the development. The building includes a low-carbon heating system, solar panels and a bioretention rain system, contributing to a BREEAM Excellent rating. The surrounding area has also been enhanced with improved landscaping and additional cycle parking.

The building incorporates distinctive design elements, including a bespoke stained-glass installation by local artist Amy McCarthy and a collection of fifteen Testament Sculptures by Devon artist Kenneth Carter. These features add character to the space while reflecting both the College and the wider Exeter community.

As part of Exeter College’s wider investment in its estate, the centre reflects a continued commitment to delivering high-quality facilities that prepare learners for their next steps.
