Exeter College Travel Support Scheme for 16-18 Full Time Learners 2024/25

We don’t want the cost of travel to be a barrier to you accessing an outstanding education. All full time 16-18 learners who live more than 3 miles from College can access subsidised travel passes for buses and/or trains regardless of household income. However, we know that the cost of living crisis is particularly impacting lower income families in Devon, so Exeter College has increased it’s investment in supporting travel costs for eligible students starting courses in September 2024. The new levels of support will now offer extra travel subsidies to households with an income below £50k per year. This means that travelling to Exeter College might cost much less than you think (and will be completely free of charge for some households). See below for how much a train or bus pass will cost in the next academic year: 2024/25.

Government announces new PGCE bursaries for further education

Training to Teach in the FE Sector has just got easier!

The government has announced that those planning on completing a PGCE in a further education subject during 2023-24 could now be eligible for a tax-free bursary, worth between £15,000 to £29,000.

This incentive is to encourage individuals to train as teachers in certain areas where teachers are in short supply. Eligible disciplines include Engineering, English, Computing, Maths and Sciences. Funding is also now available for those training to teach pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).

The Department for Education has announced that they will award these bursaries to trainees based on their relevant qualifications or professional experience, and their intentions in teaching one of the above subjects in the further education sector.

Those training to teach Maths, Science, Engineering, or Computing could receive bursaries of up to £29,000.  English, for example, will receive a £15,000 bursary; and £15,000 will be given to those who train to teach SEND learners.

The finite pot of money on offer from the government will be available to learners on a first-come, first-served basis.

As long as you have: not previously completed a teaching qualification, a GCSE grade C (new grade 4) or above in maths and English and hold a Level 3 qualification in the subject you’re training in; you can access this bursary. Whilst your degree does need to contain some cross over to your teaching subject it does not need to be the same. Now is your chance to inspire the future by teaching!

If you’re interested in becoming a qualified teacher or would like to complete a PGCE in post-16 education and training, check out what Exeter College has to offer you

To find out more information and to apply for the bursary, visit the government’s website.

Come along to our Open Event on Wednesday 29 March 2023 to find out more.

Take the leap and get into teaching

Been thinking about getting into teaching? Harry Faint, Media and Performing Arts Programme Leader at Exeter College says; “Do it. Regardless of whether teaching is your forever career or just a step, it will unlock so much for you.”

The Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) is available to study at Exeter College and with government bursaries available for people looking to get into Further Education (FE) teacher training for 2022-23, now is the perfect time to take the leap and apply.

Harry continues; “I loved the course because of my mentors and the people studying alongside me. It gave me supportive, tangible, on the job experience, but with the space to develop and make mistakes.”

The PGCE is a level 6/7 programme for those who wish to enter the profession in a full teaching role in post-16 education and training. This programme is studied over one-year, full time and contributes to professional formation QTLS status. The course runs for five days a week from September to June.

Over the last four years, Exeter College has employed upwards of 75% of its PGCE trainees in a range of roles across the college, both part-time and full-time.

Ellie is currently studying for the PGCE, she said; “The level of support I have received from Exeter College, both the Teacher Education team and my faculty, has been phenomenal. It has been an extremely positive experience so far. I have felt encouraged to express my own personality through teaching instead of being taught to teach only one way which I think is really special.”

Before studying the PGCE course, Ellie studied for a BA (Hons) English Language and Literature with the Open University whilst being a full-time parent to three children. She then went on to complete a full academic year as a learning coach in a secondary school.

She goes on to say; “The things that drew me to the PGCE course that Exeter College provides were that it was convenient for commuting purposes, it offered on site placements that are conducive to your specialism and that the course is overseen and accredited by the University of Exeter.

“If someone said to me that they were thinking about going into teaching I would say go for it! You need to be driven, have empathy and patience and be prepared to work extremely hard but the rewards are so worth it. Seeing those little lightbulb moments in your learners’ eyes and seeing their successes are the most rewarding and amazing experiences.”

The bursaries, available for the 2022 to 2023 academic year, are awarded to trainees based on their relevant qualifications or professional experience, and their intention to teach a designated priority subject in the FE sector.

To find out more about the PGCE and the funding options available, visit the next Adult and Higher Education Open Event at Exeter College on Wednesday 6 April or contact the Adult Advice Team on 01392 400170 or email adultadvice@exe-coll.ac.uk.

Improved Bursary Support Announced at Exeter College

Bursary support

In response to the ongoing financial impacts of the Coronavirus pandemic, we’re extending our bursary support to make more students eligible to apply for financial help through the scheme.

Our Bursary Fund is used to provide financial support to 16-19-year-old students from low-income households, helping to cover some of the costs associated with their further education. Our funding can help to cover resource fees, travel costs and access to free school meals.

If you’re a school leaver who is due to start with us in September 2020 and you come from a household with a combined income below £24,000, you are now eligible to apply for support via the Bursary Fund which would include a free travel pass to get to and from College. Similarly, you would be eligible to receive a 50% contribution towards fees and, if required for your study, a DBS check and a Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) card.

On top of this, we’ve also expanded the scheme so that more learners can benefit. Those from households earning £17,000 or under are eligible to apply for free travel as well as 100% of costs covered for resource fees, DBS checks and the CSCS card. Those from households in receipt of certain means-tested welfare benefits are eligible for all of the above, plus free College meals.

Director of Student Experience Kristyn Woodward said, “We’ve moved all of the boundaries to include more students to be eligible for this funding support.

“As an organisation, we’ve worked to support the community through this challenging period with our supply of PPE to the NHS, our work with Food4Heroes to provide free meals to NHS staff and now this shift in bursary support moves to support our next generation of learners to get the exceptional education they deserve, no matter what the circumstances.”

We allocate our Bursary Fund on a first-come, first-served basis, and students will need to provide evidence of household income when applying for support. Get the bursary application form now.

We would also like to remind students that even if they’ve completed a year of study at different further education provider, they’re still eligible to join us at Exeter College to restart or continue their chosen courses.

Wellbeing and Support

The changes to our Bursary Funding is just one of the many ways we look after our learners, inside and outside of College.

From application to graduation and beyond, we’re proud to support our students throughout their studies.

Here at Exeter College, we have specialist teams in place to guide, support and mentor students. Our College Advice Team is there to support applicants from the start of their college journey, helping them decide on their course choices and answering questions on study requirements and life at the College. If you’d like to speak to a member of our Advice Team, you can contact them on CAT@exe-coll.ac.uk.

When students join us, their first point of contact is their Personal Tutor. Our tutors are there to guide, monitor and support students’ progress, helping them to achieve their goals. Additionally, they also oversee the implementation of our Personal Development Programme, which is designed to help learners think about their long term goals and how best to achieve them.

We also have a fantastic Student Experience Department at our college. This team supports students with wellbeing, enrichment opportunities and financial support during their studies. Furthermore, we have a team of counsellors offering our learners a safe and confidential space to review anything that might be bothering them and to help them work out tangible steps to help support them and their student experience.

Our learners are similarly supported after college when they’re looking for their next steps. Our Progression and Employability Team provide expert advice on anything from how to ace that first job interview, to help with university applications.

We will be enrolling soon for the September 2020 start. To find out more information, check out our enrolment page

If you’re a school leaver, there’s still time to apply online to study with us. Once all documents have been sent over and reviewed, applicants will receive a conditional offer.
