Overview

We advise booking early to avoid disappointment. You can now book ahead online for all three terms.

All students will be given advice on preparing earthenware and stoneware for firing in the kiln.

Beginners will explore the properties of different clays and be introduced to hand-building techniques, pinching, coiling, slabbing, pattern/texture and throwing.

More experienced students can explore their own ideas, making more complex forms and experiment with the effects produced by different glazing techniques.

Many students find it a relaxing therapy after a day at work and an opportunity for some personal uninterrupted creative time.

Learners will be taught through a mixture of demonstrations from your tutor, whole group teaching and one-to-one tuition. The group is informal and friendly.

What topics will I study?

You will cover the following (format is flexible and may vary):

  • Week 1: An introduction to hand building techniques: pinch pots, coil pots, slabs.
  • Week 2: Larger slab or coil pot project
  • Week 3: Throwing bowls on the potters wheel
  • Week 4: Turning/trimming on the potters wheel
  • Week 5: Decorative techniques and glazing
  • Week 6: Sculptural techniques
  • Week 7: Using slips and earthenware
  • Week 8: Throwing cylinders
  • Week 9: Attaching handles and sprigs

Any work in three dimensions, but no prior experience is required. All abilities are welcome.
