A Metal Fabricator Apprentice will be manufacturing anything that can be fabricated out of metal, such as bridges, oil rigs and ships.

Overview

A Metal Fabricator Apprentice will be manufacturing anything that can be fabricated out of metal, such as bridges, oil rigs and ships. This apprenticeship will develop skills in welding, metal handling and the use of a variety of manufacturing tools.

You will achieve:
– IFA Metal Fabrication Apprenticeship
– End Point Assessment
– If required: Functional Skills (English, Maths)

Topics include:

  • Planning and preparation of metal fabrication activities before commencing work
  • Checking that all materials conform to the specified grades, dimensions and thicknesses identified on detailed engineering drawings
  • Interpreting technical drawings, patterns, templates and specifications to mark out
  • Produce and assemble complex fabricated products to meet the required specification and quality requirements
  • Cutting, drilling, shaping and preparing metal materials during fabrication activities using manual and power tools and thermal and laser cutting
  • Carry out quality checks on component parts and completed assemblies
  • Comply and ensure safe working practices at all times
  • Monitor resources and activities throughout the fabrication of products or components, identifying areas and improve the production process where possible

Next steps: Some Apprentices go into employment OR progress onto a Level 4 Manufacturing Engineering Technician Apprenticeship.

Entry Requirements

Maths and English GCSE, grade C/4 (or equivalent). If you do not have these qualifications our team will support you to gain these skills alongside your Apprenticeship.

Apprentices have access to all facilities across college. These include the college Learning Resource Centres and the college gym.
