The course will prepare you for a variety of roles within the health and social care sector by covering the knowledge, skills and behaviours within relevant occupational standards, including Integrated Health and Social Care, Healthcare Management, Public Health and Health Promotion, Healthcare and Nursing Assistant Practice.

This Higher Technical Qualification has been designed to address the increasing need for high quality professional and technically skilled staff within the healthcare.

You will have access to dedicated higher education facilities, e-learning and mixed media resources within the faculty and enjoy visits from guest speakers and employers. You will demonstrate your skills using reflection, presentations, IT and guided research. Assessment is coursework based and you will attend a mixture of lectures, tutorials, demonstrations and student-led seminars. The course will provide you with the critical skills and practical competencies sought by employers and required for progression to further higher education study. You will need to complete 225 hours of work experience in a healthcare setting in your first year, with a further 225 hours required in the second year.

Year 1

  • Law, policy and ethical practice
  • Demonstrating professional principles and values in health and social care practice
  • Applied anatomy and physiology

Year 2

  • Innovation and improvement through participatory action research
  • Recognising and meeting the needs of individuals with long term health conditions
  • End of life care planning and support

The contact time takes place over two consecutive days, but hours can vary from one or two full days.

The course will prepare you for direct employment in the health and social care, voluntary and charitable sectors. Alternatively, you could pursue further university studies, for example, a Bachelors degree in Health and Social Care related subjects.

Entry Requirements

You will need 64 UCAS tariff points (minimum) from AS, A Level or AVCE programmes, BTEC National/Extended Diploma/Certificate – grades MPP/MM, GNVQ Advanced, an appropriate NVQ at Level 3, an Access qualification or other qualifications deemed equivalent to the above. GCSE Maths and English is required at grade C (or 4) or above (or equivalent O Level). You will need an enhanced DBS check completed through the College. There will be a year 1 programme fee of £50.00 to cover this.

You will be based at the Hele Road site, with access to Learning Resource Centres, study areas, cafes and computer suites.
