What is it like to study this course and how will I be assessed?

This course is for complete beginners who want to improve their practical skills using everyday tools found in the home - for example battery drills, saws, tape measures, spirit levels. The aim is to make and take home a set wooden project such as a garden tray, bird box, bird feeder or garden planter.

What topics will I study?

• Introduction to aims of course
• Workshop health and safety
• Individual learning plans (ILP’s)
• Identifying and safe usage of different woodwork hand tools
• Identifying parts and safe usage of a battery drill
• Identifying different types of fixings
• Plan and make at least one wooden project
• Finishing techniques and recapping on course aims.

What are the entry requirements?

None – just a keen interest in learning about woodwork! All students on construction courses are required to have their own steel-toed shoes. Overalls or a change of clothing must be brought to each lesson.

What facilities are there?

This course is based at Devon and Exeter Construction Training Centre (Falcon House) in Sowton Industrial Estate, which has a wide range of practical work areas and trade specific classrooms. Learners will be given a college ID badge and have access to all college facilities, including learning centres and computers. 

What can the course lead on to?

Creative woodwork and other construction courses.

Are there any additional costs?

All students on construction courses are required to purchase their own steel-toed shoes. Overalls or a change of clothing must be brought to each lesson.
The fee includes materials used.

It is important that you apply and pay for your course at least one week before the course starts to ensure that you will have access to all the facilities and resources in your first week.
Please be aware that there are no car parking facilities at Exeter College city centre sites, but public car parks are available across the city.
