What is it like to study this course and how will I be assessed?

The programme is designed for those who wish to study a varied and interesting course at entry level, to develop confidence and progress towards further education, training or employment. Course work is based around real life situations and you are encouraged to develop your ability to work independently, to share experiences and to build on your existing skills and knowledge.

You will be taught by a team of specialist lecturers and vocational subject experts. You will have a personal tutor and be part of a tutor group. You will have access to in-class support, as well as a specialist Functional Skills lecturer. Assessment is continuous, it begins during the induction period and continues throughout your programme. You will produce a portfolio of work by the end of the year. Regular reviews are held and the college reporting system allows your progress to be monitored carefully at regular intervals.

What topics will I study?

The course consists of:

  • Maths and English Functional Skills
  • Work Skills – including a Work Experience Placement
  • Personal, Social and Health Development – including team work, cooking and an enterprise project

Vocational Tasters in some of the following areas:

  • Art and Media
  • Automotive
  • Construction (bricklaying, painting and decorating and carpentry)
  • Childcare  
  • Hair and Beauty
  • Health and Social Care
  • Performing Arts
  • Outdoor Adventure
  • Sport
  • Travel and Tourism

What experiences will I get?

Work experience is a mandatory element of the course with varying levels of support as required.

What are the entry requirements?

There are no formal entry requirements. You just need enthusiasm, commitment and a desire to succeed. All applicants are interviewed by a course tutor. There are taster sessions available throughout the year.

What can I study alongside this course?

This course is studied on its own and cannot be combined with other courses.

What facilities are there?

You will have access to classrooms with interactive white boards and specialist facilities to help develop independence. You will have access to learning resource centres. There is a refectory and coffee shop based at the Hele Road site. You will have access to college wide departments for vocational training.

What can the course lead on to?

There are a number of options open to you when you complete your programme. Progression within college to Vocational Studies Extra or a Level 1 or an NVQ programme may be possible or you may prefer to look for employment or take up work based training.

Are there any additional costs?

There may be some costs associated with some activities. These might include costs for cookery, leisure or outdoor adventure activities. Wherever possible these are kept to a minimum. There will be a £55 charge at the start of the course to cover the majority of the costs throughout the year. However, there may be additional costs for items of equipment for vocational tasters, such as overalls and steel toecap boots and end of year optional activities.

This further education course is free for all 16-18 year olds who are resident in the UK and the European Economic Area for the last 3 years.
