Travel and Tourism (Aviation Pathway)

This course allows you to gain an in depth understanding of the Travel and Tourism Industry and includes practical experience and assessment at the Future Skills Centre near Exeter Airport. You will experience a real-life aviation environment and use equipment that all airlines use around the world.

Overview

This course is 2 years – in year 1 you will complete the Introductory Diploma and in year 2 you will complete the Extended Diploma.

In the Introductory Diploma you will study, the UK travel and tourism industry, customer service in travel and tourism and preparing for a career in travel and tourism, together with additional units that could include:

  • Travel and tourism destinations
  • Hospitality in travel and tourism
  • Investigating airline cabin crew
  • UK visitor attractions
  • Travel agency operations
  • Resort representatives roles and responsibilities

Additional qualification: Level 2 Airline Cabin Crew

This additional qualification MUST be taken with the Level 3 Introductory Diploma/Extended Diploma Travel and Tourism (Air Cabin Crew Pathway). It is based in the Future Skills Centre near Exeter Airport. This course runs alongside your main Level 3 Introductory Diploma in Travel and Tourism and is ideal if you want to find employment as airline cabin crew or if you wish to enhance the skills required to work within the travel and tourism industry. This course includes practical experience and assessment at the Future Skills Centre. It allows you to train in a cabin simulator and door trainer and have the use of an evacuation slide and other airline emergency equipment.

You will learn about the role of cabin crew on board and familiarise yourself with emergency procedures and equipment used. You will also develop practical skills in how to deal with first aid incidents on board.

Other practical activities include water lifesaving, airline firefighting, use of the emergency slide and opening and closing aircraft doors. You will learn about time zones and airline terminology and will complete a short online exam to assess this.

The qualification is recognised by many airlines and prepares you for work in the airline industry. Candidates who achieve the Award will increase their chances of interview and selection with airlines across the UK and Europe.

During your time at the Future Skills Centre a full industry standard uniform must be worn.

Assessments

You will be taught and assessed in a variety of ways, through written assignments and presentations as well as practical role plays 

Visits

Students will have the opportunity to go on a number of local and national visits as part of the course. In year two we normally run an overseas visit, previous destinations include Disneyland Paris and Barcelona.

Work Experience

You will be given the opportunity to arrange your own preferred work experience placement in a suitable travel and tourism organisation.

Careers and Further Opportunities

This course is an excellent pathway into gaining employment in the industry or you could decide to progress to university. There is a very good success rate for students going straight into employment with companies such as tour operators (UK and overseas), travel agencies, airlines, airports and hotels.

This course is ideal if you have always wanted to work in an airline or travel environment, giving excellent customer service both in the air as cabin crew, as ground staff in an airport or working within another role in aviation.  

What can I study alongside this course?
This course is studied on its own and cannot be combined with other courses.

Entry Requirements

You will need five GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including English Language and Maths.

You also need the personal qualities required for working in the travel industry, such as high grooming standards, good communication skills, enthusiasm and a willingness to complete practical assessments. During your time at the Future Skills Centre, a full cabin crew uniform must be worn.

Facilities

You will have access to Learning Resource Centres (LRCs), the Central Fitness gym, a range of on-site cafés and enrichment activities.

Additional Costs

Students are expected to pay for a uniform at approximately £150. A number of additional visits will be offered at additional costs.
