What is it like to study this course and how will I be assessed?

This course combines the practical and theoretical elements of the Outdoor Adventurous Activities Industry. It consists of a range of experiences and qualifications in the outdoor industry such as MIAS Level 1, that will provide a platform for you to progress to either a Level 2 apprenticeship or a full time programme in outdoor adventure.

Lectures will be both theoretical and practical. Assessment is through practical observation, witness statements and written coursework.

What topics will I study?

Diploma in Sport and Active Leisure
This programme has a work related focus and will be orientated to the Outdoor Industry. The course will prepare you for employment in the vocational area of sport and active leisure and in particular the outdoor industry. It will also provide you with valuable team working and leadership experience.

An important part of the programme is to develop essential skills in both English and Maths. You will therefore be able to develop these core skills through studying for separate qualifications in Functional Skills in both English and Maths. Additionally you will also study a programme of units that lead to a qualification in Personal and Social Development.

What experiences will I get?

Some of your programme will take place within the Haven Banks Outdoor Education Centre in Exeter offering a realistic work environment for the programme of study and enabling you to experience the real work within the industry. You will experience a range of outdoor adventurous activities and participate in trips to other local activity providers and locations such as Dartmoor. At the end of the year there is also the option to take part in a week long residential.

What are the entry requirements?

English and maths entry requirements: Grade 2 in English Language and in Maths.
Plus standard entry requirements: Two GCSEs at grade 2 or above, or equivalent.
Subject specific entry requirements or recommendations: You also need the personal qualities required to work in the outdoor and adventurous activities industry.

What can I study alongside this course?

This course is studied on its own and cannot be combined with other courses.

What facilities are there?

Haven Banks Outdoor Education Centre for all outdoor activities, as well as local areas such as Dartmoor, Woodbury Common and Exmouth as well as all of the college facilities including the fitness centre, sports hall and learning centres.

What can the course lead on to?

On completion of this course you may wish to progress to study the Level 2 in Sport (Outdoor and Adventurous Activities) with Exeter College at Haven Banks Outdoor Education Centre or apply for a Level 2 Apprenticeship in Outdoor Adventure.

Are there any additional costs?

A £150 resourse fee applies.

The resource fee covers trips and visits, use of adventurous activity equipment such as kayaks and mountain bikes. Sports equipment, first aid and expedition resources.

There will also be some personal equipment that is required, such as walking boots and waterproofs. A full kit list will be given at your interview.

This further education course is free for all 16-18 year olds who are resident in the UK and the European Economic Area for the last 3 years.
