What is it like to study this course and how will I be assessed?

A Software Developer Apprentice will build and test simple, high-quality code across front end, logic and database layers. You will work as part of a larger team on a variety of projects, learning everything you need to pursue your chosen career.

• If required: Functional Skills (English,
Maths)
• Industry recognised vendor
qualifications including Microsoft
Certified Professional Status

What topics will I study?

  • Understand the development life-cycle
  • Understand analysis artefacts, including UML diagrams
  • Design and create simple data models and software to effectively communicate understanding of the program
  • Design and develop effective user interfaces
  • Learn how to code in industry-standard development environments using OOP
  • Testing code and analysing results
  • Build complex algorithms and understand the maths required to be a Software Developer
  • Work effectively within a team
  • Achieve the standards of a professional and secure working environment
  • Understand and utilise skills to build, manage and deploy code into enterprise environments

What experiences will I get?

Apprentices have the opportunity to interact with other apprentices at a range of different workplaces, so can share their experiences. You will also benefit from learning at a Microsoft Showcase College.

What are the entry requirements?

Every employer is different and therefore the entry requirements can vary. As a guide you ideally need GCSE grade 4 or above in English and Maths. However, we will work with you and provide additional support in order to help you achieve the functional skills element or GCSE requirements of the Apprenticeship. Support can be delivered either prior to your Apprenticeship via a traineeship or during the delivery of your programme.

What facilities are there?

Use of IT Labs with full access to dedicated test environments. Work with up-to-date IDEs including Visual Studio and be able to deploy using cloud technologies including Microsoft Azure.
Exeter College is one of only 12 colleges in the UK to be chosen as a Microsoft Showcase College; the first of it's kind in Devon, championing the development of essential IT skills.

What can the course lead on to?

Some Apprentices go into employment, working within a range organisations or as a freelancer

What support can I get?

You will have a dedicated Skills Officer who you can contact at any time. They will visit you in the workplace every 10 weeks to carry out a progress review with you and your employer.

What will this training cost me?

This can vary depending on the age of the Apprentice and the size of an organisation. There will be no cost to the Apprentice.
