What is it like to study this course and how will I be assessed?

This course is excellent preparation for GCSE and will suit learners who need to work at a comfortable pace in order to lay solid foundations in all areas of mathematics before progressing to the more demanding GCSE course.  It is suitable for anyone who has not achieved Functional Skills or Key Skills at Level 1 or who gained a low grade GCSE (grade E F or G) at school.

The dates for this course are:

Mon 16-Sep-19 to 29-Jun-20  - 10:00 - 12:30
Mon 16-Sep-19 to 29-Jun-20 - 18:00 - 20:30
Tues 17-Sep-19 to 30-Jun-20 - 18:00 - 20:30
Wed 18-Sep-19 to 01-Jul-20 - 13:00 - 15:30
Thurs 19-Sep-19 to 02-Jul-20 - 13:00 - 15:30

Applicants may lack confidence with their maths skills (e.g. not know their times tables). Bilingual learners should ideally be fluent speakers of English who have achieved ESOL Level 1 in reading and speaking/listening.

What topics will I study?

Topics are based around everyday situations that require maths skills in the workplace or in leisure.  For example working out discounts – what is 15% off £80?  Learners study fractions, simple graphs, shape and area, and measurement in addition to consolidating their addition, subtraction, multiplication and division skills.
