What is it like to study this course and how will I be assessed?

This course is suitable for Beginners through to Advanced, we will be working directly from the model. We will be looking at drawing techniques that are applied specifically to the figure.

Learners will be taught through a combination of demonstrations from your tutor, whole group teaching, and one to one tuition. This one to one tuition ensures that you can work at your own pace.

An experienced tutor will be available at all times to help you gain confidence quickly. This group is informal and friendly.

Please visit June Janes (tutor) website to see previous students work http://www.lifedrawingandportrait.co.uk/index.html

Please note: Thursday classes are taught at Exeter College's Centre for Creative Industries (CCI) building and Friday classes are at St Matthew's Church Hall, Lower Summerlands.

What topics will I study?

Working directly from the model, you will be looking at Line, Tone, and Colour. This will include the basics of correct proportions, looking at the darks and lights that play across the figure, and the colour within these darks and lights. Finally we will be considering editing and abstracting within figure work.

Each session will consist of warm up exercises that are relevant to the session theme and often focussing on one particular feature .eg. eyes, nose, mouth, ears, hands etc. These exercises are then followed by a single long pose. Here the emphasis is on developing your individual work through one to one tuition.

We will also be referencing historical and contemporary artists’ work. Learning takes place through a combination of tutor explanation, peer group exercises, one to one tuition, practical demonstrations as well as learning from other class members.

What are the entry requirements?

None - This course is suitable for beginners and the more advanced.

What facilities are there?

Nearby parking. Large, well lit rooms with drawing boards ( Fri sessions include easels). College ID badges are available so you may access all college facilities including the Learning Resource Centres and college computers which you can use outside of lesson time.

What can the course lead on to?

You can progress as far as you choose -  gaining a portfolio of work with which to apply to colleges for formal qualifications, or you can directly exhibit and sell your work.

Are there any additional costs?

None - Initially you will need to bring an A3 or A2 cartridge drawing pad, pencil and rubber with you. You might choose to work in other mediums in which case you will also need to purchase and bring these with you. Your tutor will be happy to discuss this with you.
