What is it like to study this course and how will I be assessed?

Having already fully completed the Level 1 Diploma you will build on knowledge and practical skills gained from the previous year of study.

Work will be carried out in the workshops, with some formal classroom sessions and by working in the resource centre. In the workshops you will build up competence in carrying out practical tests. You will have to complete written and online tests and produce a portfolio of evidence and practical competence tests in order to pass the units.

What topics will I study?

You will complete Functional Skills in English, Maths or ICT.

Units will cover:

  • Apply paint systems by brush and roller
  • Apply standard papers to ceilings and walls
  • Apply water-borne paint systems using high volume low pressure (hvlp) spray equipment
  • Erect and dismantle access equipment and working platforms
  • Health, safety and welfare in construction and associated industries
  • Knowledge of construction technology
  • Knowledge of technical information, quantities and communication with others
  • Prepare surfaces for decoration
  • Produce specialist decorative finishes

What experiences will I get?

You will benefit from strong industry links, guest speakers and site visits.

Although work experience is not a requirement of the course students attending this programme would benefit from work experience in order to aid progression and potentially improve employment opportunities.

What are the entry requirements?

This is a progression course for those students who have:

  • Successfully completed the Level 1 Diploma in Painting and Decorating
  • Previously shown a high commitment to studying by achieving high attendance rates (in excess of 85%) and a strong commitment towards becoming 'work ready'
  • Have been successful in achieving Functional Skills targets

Students who have not achieved all the above may still be considered for the course based on how well they performed in the previous year and their attitude and commitment towards achieving their full potential.

This course is studied on its own and cannot be combined with other courses.

What can the course lead on to?

If you find employment, you can progress onto an Apprenticeship (Level 2 NVQ) or an Advanced Apprenticeship (Level 3 NVQ) working towards an NVQ Diploma and attend the college on a day or block release basis. This route will enable you to become a fully qualified Painter or Decorator.

Are there any additional costs?

You will need to be equipped with basic stationery for all your sessions. You will need to have your own overalls and safety boots- advice will be given at interview. If you are required to purchase a subject specific course book you will be advised either at interview or at the start of the course. There is a non-refundable Workshop Fee of £95 per full time student per year. This will contribute towards the cost of tools for use in the workshop so that you do not need to provide your own. It will also cover the cost of one Hi-Viz jacket, one pair of safety glasses, one pair of gloves and the exam fee for one CSCS test. 

This further education course is free for all 16-18 year olds who are resident in the UK and the European Economic Area for the last 3 years. (You must be under 19 on 31st August in the calendar year that you start your course).
