What is it like to study this course and how will I be assessed?

This course gives you the basic knowledge and skills you need to achieve an industry recognised qualification in Painting and Decoration. You will carry out a series of practical training exercises until you have a level where the tutor considers you are ready to carry out an assessed piece of work. You will complete Functional Skills in English and maths. 

Although work experience is not a requirement of the course students attending this programme would benefit from work experience in order to aid progression and potentially improve employment opportunities.

Work will be carried out mainly in the workshops, with some formal classroom sessions and by working in the resource centre. In the workshops you will build up competence in carrying out practical tests. You will have to complete online and written tests and produce a portfolio of evidence and practical competence tests in order to pass the units.

What topics will I study?

General Units:

  • Apply basic paint systems by brush and roller
  • Apply foundation and plain papers
  • Arect and dismantle access equipment and working platforms
  • Health, safety and welfare in construction and associated industries
  • Knowledge of construction technology
  • Knowledge of technical information, quantities and communication with others
  • Prepare common surface types for decoration
  • Produce standard decorative finishes
     

What experiences will I get?

You will benefit from strong industry links, guest speakers and site visits.

What are the entry requirements?

English and maths entry requirements: Grade 2 in English language and in maths.
Plus standard entry requirements: Two GCSEs at grade 2 or above, or equivalent.
Subject specific entry requirements or recommendations: If you do not have these grades you may still be able to study this course subject to an interview with a course specialist. You will be required to demonstrate that you have a high degree of enthusiasm and the commitment to succeed.

This course is studied on its own and cannot be combined with other courses.

What can the course lead on to?

You could progress onto the Level 2 Diploma in Painting and Decorating (depending on previous performance at Level 1), or explore the possibility of undertaking an Apprenticeship where you will attend the college on a day or block release basis.

 

Are there any additional costs?

You will need to be equipped with basic stationery for all your sessions. You will need to have your own overalls and safety boots - advice will be given at interview. If you are  required to purchase a subject specific course book you will be advised either at interview or at the start of the course. There is a non-refundable Workshop Fee of £95 per full time student per year. This will contribute towards the cost of tools for use in the workshop so that you do not need to provide your own. It will also cover the cost of one Hi-Viz jacket, one pair of safety glasses, one pair of gloves and the exam fee for one CSCS test. 

This further education course is free for all 16-18 year olds who are resident in the UK and the European Economic Area for the last 3 years. (You must be under 19 on 31st August in the calendar year that you start your course).
