What is it like to study this course and how will I be assessed?

Please note: this apprenticeship was formerly known as Construction Building - Decorative Finishing and Industrial Painting

This apprenticeship will equip you with the practical skills and knowledge to become a painter and decorator. This apprenticeship is for anyone working within the industry. As an apprentice you will hold a full-time job and attend college on day release throughout the programme.

As well as the NVQ you will complete the Level 2 Diploma – Painting and Decorating Technical Certificate.

What topics will I study?

This apprenticeship will equip you with the practical skills and knowledge of access equipment and working platforms, applying paint systems by brush and roller, applying foundation and plain papers and producing specialist decorative finishes. You will progress to include skills such as preparation of surfaces, applying standard papers to walls and ceilings and producing specialist decorative work.

What experiences will I get?

To be confirmed.

What are the entry requirements?

Every employer is different and therefore the entry requirements can vary. As a guide you ideally need GCSE grade 3 or above in English and maths and in some cases ICT. However, we will work with you and provide additional support in order to help you achieve the functional skills element or GCSE requirements of the Apprenticeship. Support can be delivered either prior to your Apprenticeship via a traineeship or during the delivery of your programme. You need a real interest in painting and decorating.

What facilities are there?

  • Learning resource centre
  • Refectory
  • Specialist Painting and Decorating Workshop

What can the course lead on to?

On successful completion you will be equipped to progress to a junior management role in a large company. You may also consider going on to study a Level 3 Diploma in Construction.

Are there any additional costs?

You will need safety boots, overalls and recommended text books.

What support can I get?

You will have a dedicated Skills Officer who you can contact at any time. They will visit you in the workplace every 10 weeks to carry out a progress review with you and your employer.

What will this training cost me?

If you are aged between 16 and 18 when you start your Apprenticeship Training Programme, there is no charge to you or your employer as the college will claim the funding for the cost of your programme directly from the Government.

If you are aged 19 or over and studying a Level 2 or Level 3 Apprenticeship, your employer will have to be willing to contribute as the Government will only fund part of the costs of your training - this is currently between £80 - £110 depending on the type of Apprenticeship you wish to complete.
