What is it like to study this course and how will I be assessed?

You will attend college one day a week for two years during which time you will undergo practical assessments and on-line exams. Whilst also working on site you will have to complete a series of work based assessments and gather evidence for your portfolio to meet the criteria of the NVQ. 

This course is suitable for anyone who is ineligible for apprenticeship funding and who wishes to obtain a trade qualification. You will need to be working in the industry in a role that meets the criteria of the NVQ, however you can be working part time or be self-employed.

What are the entry requirements?

GCSE Maths and English at grade C or above (or can demonstrate a suitable level of competence in these subjects).

What can the course lead on to?

As a qualified site carpenter or bench joiner you will be eligible for a blue skilled worker CSCS card which will allow you to work on site. You may also be able to progress the Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Wood Occupations.

Are there any additional costs?

You will need to provide your own safety boots and work trousers or overalls.


It is important that you apply and pay for your course at least one week before the course starts to ensure that you will have access to all the facilities and resources in your first week.
Please be aware that there are no car parking facilities at Exeter College city centre sites, but public car parks are available across the city.
