What is it like to study this course and how will I be assessed?

This is a very practical hands on course where you learn by doing. It consists of 2 x classroom sessions and 1 x all day navigation walk on Dartmoor, where we will be able to put theory into practice in the Outdoors.

This is a very friendly and informal Course, where each thing that you do, builds on what you did before. There is more time to chat out on the walk and we all get to know each other. There is a great atmosphere and no one is afraid to ask if they don’t understand something. Although it is only a short course, you will learn a lot in a short time and it is nicely paced.

* We have a choice of Saturday or Sunday for the Walk in the autumn and spring and walk according to the weather forecast. The walk is usually between 10am-4pm.

Classroom sessions and walks:

Summer classroom sessions: Thursday 25th April and Thursday 9th May 2019 7.00pm – 8.30pm

Dartmoor walk: 4th or 5th May 2019

What topics will I study?

Topics covered are Grid Refs, Compass Bearings, Pacing and Timing, Route planning and completing a route card, Clothing and Equipment and a whole lot more.

What are the entry requirements?

No previous experience is required. This is suitable for people with a reasonable level of fitness, i.e. the ability to walk 5 miles.

What facilities are there?

Bring a 1/25,000 OS Dartmoor Map and a Compass Silva Type 3 or similar. If you don’t have your own, there are a limited number that can be borrowed.

What can the course lead on to?

Previous students have gone on to lead walks for their Walking Groups and have gained the confidence to undertake longer walks e.g. Two Moors Way and Offa’s Dyke.

Are there any additional costs?

You will need suitable clothing and equipment for the days out ie, adequate layers in the Autumn and Spring, waterproofs if it is wet and appropriate footwear (preferably worn in walking boots). You will need to organise your own transport for the Dartmoor walk - details of the walk will be provided in the classroom sessions. If you have any queries please email charlespalmer@exe-coll.ac.uk

What do our students think?

Many thanks for such an enjoyable Course. I thought it went extremely well and I am pleased I made the effort to come along. I went out on Sunday to Manaton, out to Jays Grave and up to Grimspound. Saw Peregrine Falcon and Hen Harrier. I did a few bearings before I left and all went well."

Thank you for a very enjoyable Course. I now feel a lot more confident about striking off on my own, with only Map and Compass to find my way around."

It is important that you apply and pay for your course at least one week before the course starts to ensure that you will have access to all the facilities and resources in your first week.
