What is it like to study this course and how will I be assessed?

This non-accredited course provides a basic introduction to BSL. This course is suitable for complete beginners, including anyone who would like to gain a basic knowledge of BSL and those who may be thinking about studying for a Level 1 qualification in British Sign Language.

What topics will I study?

You will learn the fingerspelling alphabet, basic numbers, and simple, everyday vocabulary. By the end of the course, you will be able to meet and greet people, participate in simple everyday conversations, provide and understand basic information, and follow simple directions.

What are the entry requirements?

This is a beginners course open to anyone with no or limited knowledge of British Sign Language.

What facilities are there?

The course will be delivered through a combination of group and individual in-class activities, and homework exercises. Learning will be supported with PowerPoint presentations, handouts and video clips.

What can the course lead on to?

This course provides a good foundation for progressing on to an accredited Level 1 BSL qualification, for example the Signature Level 1 Award in British Sign Language.

Are there any additional costs?


It is important that you apply and pay for your course at least one week before the course starts to ensure that you will have access to all the facilities and resources in your first week.
Please be aware that there are no car parking facilities at Exeter College city centre sites, but public car parks are available across the city.
