What is it like to study this course and how will I be assessed?

Autumn term dates: 21-Sep-17 - 14-Dec-17 

Spring term dates: 22-Feb-18 - 24-May-18

This nail technology award builds on the basic skills of a manicure qualification.  You will develop the particular skills which are required for providing and maintaining nail enhancements.

Your programme of study will include practical and theory classes, where you will learn the necessary anatomy and physiology of the nail, nail conditions and how to consult, select and use the appropriate products, tools and equipment to provide and maintain nail enhancements. 

There will be assignment work and practical observations which will help you develop a portfolio of evidence for verification.  Your practical skills will be developed on fellow students using the UV gel system – once competence is reached; clients are to be used for assessment.   Home study may be advised for some aspects of the course.

You will be assessed practically, theoretically and orally in all areas.  Testimonials may be required as evidence in some cases.  Completed portfolios presenting your work will be are verified throughout the programme, and should include assessment books, assignments, theoretical papers and practical observation evidence.

What topics will I study?

You will study the programme through a range of activities, discussions and practical tasks that will cover the following areas:

  • Health and safety working practices
  • Communication and consultation skills
  • Knowledge of  nail enhancement products, tools and equipment
  • Anatomy and physiology of the nail and nail conditions
  • UV gel nail enhancement applications and their maintenance
  • Contra-actions and aftercare advice, to include trouble shooting

What are the entry requirements?

You will need a level 2 qualification in manicure and a real interest in nail technology.  This course is particular suited for those with current practical skills and experience of the workplace.

*If you have not completed any previous accredited related qualification or work experience within the industry, then the level 2 Award in Health and Safety must be taken alongside this Award in Nail Technology.

Our well equipped beauty clinics offer a fantastic learning environment.  The learning resource centre provides all learners with access to the internet as well as specialist information.

What can the course lead on to?

You may seek employment as a Nail Technician or progress onto further advanced technology courses within the industry.

Are there any additional costs?

You will need a personal kit (approximate cost £185) and a uniform should be worn in line with our code of practice.  Full details will be provided at enrolment. A nail kit is included in the cost of the course.


It is important that you apply and pay for your course at least one week before the course starts to ensure that you will have access to all the facilities and resources in your first week.
Please be aware that there are no car parking facilities at Exeter College city centre sites, but public car parks are available across the city.
