What is it like to study this course and how will I be assessed?

The Award in Health and Safety for the Hair and Beauty Sector is an additional qualification required alongside the Award in Manicure, Award in Body Massage, Award in Massage using pre-blended oil and Award in Nail Technology. NB: this qualification is embedded within the fore mentioned courses and is not available as a stand alone course.

What topics will I study?

This unit is about being aware of the risks in the salon, knowing how to identify them and the responsibilities to deal with them.  You will study:

  • How to maintain health, safety and security practices within the professional environment.
  • Knowledge of Health and safety legislations within the industry
  • Employer and employees health and safety responsibilities
  • The importance of personal presentation, hygiene procedures and professional conduct
  • Methods of sterilisation and how to ensure salon hygiene

What are the entry requirements?

A general interest in therapeutic treatments. Applicants must be 19+.

What facilities are there?

Our well-equipped spa and beauty clinics offer a fantastic learning environment. We also offer an excellent range of holistic treatments. The learning resource centre provides all students with access to the internet as well as specialist information.

What can the course lead on to?

This qualification will enable you to work in the industry.

Are there any additional costs?

Students need to wear a white polo shirt or black tunic, black trousers and shoes during practical sessions and must provide their own towels, oil, talc, foot cream, tissues and pillow case. A booklist of recommended books will be provided during your course and every student will have access to the College Learning Resource Centre (LRC). Please refer to your main programme for details of resources and uniform.


It is important that you apply and pay for your course at least one week before the course starts to ensure that you will have access to all the facilities and resources in your first week.
Please be aware that there are no car parking facilities at Exeter College city centre sites, but public car parks are available across the city.
