What is it like to study this course and how will I be assessed?

A practical course for beginners covering the skills required to perform basic carpentry tasks. You will need to wear solid shoes and overalls/old clothing. Materials and tools provided.

Students will have informal assessment and feedback from the tutor and this will be recorded on an individual learning plan. Students will not have access to machinery during classes.

What topics will I study?

You will cover the following (Similar format for both terms, format is flexible and may vary):

  • Introduction to course
  • Health and safety induction
  • Tour of workshop and brief introduction to the safe use of hand tools
  • Constructing basic joints using hand tools measurement and reading basic drawings
  • Using hand planes and fitting butt hinges
  • Constructing door lining and hanging door using scaled work pieces
  • Scribing exercise and completing any unfinished work

 

What are the entry requirements?

None, beginners welcome. All students on construction courses are required to have their own steel-toed shoes. Overalls or a change of clothing must be brought to each lesson.

What facilities are there?

Learners will be given a college ID badge and have access to all college facilities, including learning centres and computers.

Are there any additional costs?

You will need to wear strong shoes.


It is important that you apply and pay for your course at least one week before the course starts to ensure that you will have access to all the facilities and resources in your first week.
Please be aware that there are no car parking facilities at Exeter College city centre sites, but public car parks are available across the city.
