What is it like to study this course and how will I be assessed?

This Level 2 Technical Certificate in Beauty Retail aims to provide you with a range of essential technical practical skills and knowledge. This practical based training is ideal preparation for gaining employment in beauty retail or further specialist training within the industry.

Your programme will cover all of the work specific core skills and knowledge in beauty retail. You will explore different products and selling techniques, and study the concepts of promotional planning, marketing methods and successful retailing. This qualification will focus on providing professional customer service and communication skills, as well as developing steps for planning promotional activities within skin care, make-up and fragrances.

Practical skills in performing skin care and make-up demonstrations will be developed on fellow students; once a level of competence is reached, you will then be able to work on clients in our well-equipped beauty clinics. Whilst studying you will have the opportunity to engage in enrichment activities and workshops. These may include development of employability skills, employer involvement activities, team work and promotional retail events, communications and customer service; all of which are important when you are thinking about working in the beauty retail industry. 

To gain this qualification, candidates must successfully achieve the following assessments:

One externally set, internally marked and externally moderated assignment (Practical based). In this synoptic assignment you will use and present a selection of skills, techniques, concepts and theories from across the programme area.

One externally set, externally marked exam, sat under examination conditions (Theoretical based).  This exam is designed to assess the depth and breadth of knowledge of the programme, using a range of question types.

This qualification is graded:  Pass / Merit / Distinction / Distinction*

What topics will I study?

This qualification covers all the core skills you will need to progress to further learning and training, or to enter the world of work within beauty retail industries. You will study the following mandatory units:

  • Working in the beauty retail industry
  • Communication and customer service
  • Sales and promotional activities
  • Skin care for beauty retail
  • Make-up for beauty retail
  • Retails of additional products for beauty retail

What experiences will I get?

You will work in our well-equipped Beauty Salons offering promotional activities and demonstrations to a wide range of clients. You will also have the opportunity to attend master class workshops and employer involvement activities.

These can include: Dermalogica workshops, Residential visits with master class opportunities in make-up; Beauty exhibitions and lectures by industry experts. 

What are the entry requirements?

English and Maths entry requirements: Grade 3 in English language and Maths. If you do not have a grade 4 in English and Maths, you will be required to study for this alongside your course.

Plus standard entry requirements: Two GCSE’s at grade 3 or above, or equivalent.

What can I study alongside this course?

This course is studied on its own and cannot be combined with other courses.

What facilities are there?

There are five fully equipped beauty clinics, a media make-up room and four hairdressing salons, providing you with a professional working environment.You will have access to learning resource centres and there is a refectory in the Hele building.  Personal lockers are available for use when you are at college.

What can the course lead on to?

Achievement of this qualification demonstrates to an employer that you have the essential technical skills, knowledge and customer service to be employed as a beauty retailer.This qualification could lead to an apprenticeship or employment in beauty retail, working in a department store, or for a specialist make-up or skin care company.

Alternatively this qualification will allow you to progress onto the Level 2 Technical Certificate in Beauty Therapy or the Level 2 Technical Certificate in Make-up Artistry. This will enhance the skills and knowledge that you have gained to progress into a Beauty Therapy or Make-up artist role and a wider career choice.  

Are there any additional costs?

You will be required to purchase a personal kit and uniform.

There are options to attend enrichment workshops and educational visits at an additional cost.

This further education course is free for all 16-18 year olds who are resident in the UK and the European Economic Area for the last 3 years. (You must be under 19 on 31st August in the calendar year that you start your course).
