What is it like to study this course and how will I be assessed?

The Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Barbering is designed for learners who work in or wish to pursue a career in barbering. The Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Barbering provides the necessary skills and knowledge that prove occupational competence as a barber

This qualification allows you to develop and practice the skills required to provide barbering services for a range of hair types. You will also cover shaving, cutting facial hair, creating patterns in hair as well as cutting and styling men’s hair and consulting with clients.

What topics will I study?

Topics will include:

  • Advise and consult with clients
  • Shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp
  • Develop and maintain your effectiveness at work
  • Cut men's hair using basic techniques
  • Cut facial hair to shape using basic techniques
  • Create basic outlines and detailing in hair
  • Assist with shaving services

To gain this qualification, you must successfully achieve the following assessments:

  • Complete a portfolio of evidence for each unit
  • Complete all essential knowledge and understanding requirements including Online exams

What experiences will I get?

You will have the opportunity to train in the college's new showcase salon 'Zeal @ Exeter College'. Experience a busy, commercial environment and work with real clients.  This practical based training is ideal preparation for gaining employment in the hairdressing industry or for further specialist study. We work closely with employers who contribute to the knowledge and delivery of training and you will have the opportunity to attend industry exhibitions and industry workshops.

What are the entry requirements?

Every employer is different and therefore the entry requirements can vary. As a guide you ideally need GCSE grade 4 or above in English and Maths. However, we will work with you and provide additional support in order to help you achieve the functional skills element or GCSE requirements of the Apprenticeship. Support can be delivered either prior to your Apprenticeship via a traineeship or during the delivery of your programme.

What facilities are there?

We have fantastic commercial hair salons, beauty clinics, theatrical make-up studios and Spa. You will have the opportunity to train in the faculties brand new showcase salon Zeal @ Exeter College all at the Laurence Building on our Hele Road site. All our students experience a busy commercial environment, H2B professional treatments are available to visitors from all over the southwest. Learning resource centres also provide students with access to the internet as well as specialist information to support them during their studies.

What can the course lead on to?

Apprentices will be working towards achievement of the following:

  • Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Barbering
  • Employee Rights and Responsibilities
  • Personal Learning and Thinking Skills
  • Functional Skills in English and Maths (where applicable)

Following successful completion of this qualification you may progress to employment or progress onto the NVQ3 Diploma in Barbering.

This course will launch you directly into the workplace and provides an excellent way to build your career and progress to further training or full time work.

Are there any additional costs?

Organized trips/workshops and you will need to purchase kit, uniform and text book.

What support can I get?

You will have a dedicated Skills Officer who you can contact at any time. They will visit you in the workplace every 10 weeks to carry out a progress review with you and your employer.

What will this training cost me?

This can vary depending on the age of the Apprentice and the size of an organisation. There will be no cost to the Apprentice.
